<p> Island Princess is a fabulous floating resort designed to make your stay onboard truly memorable. The Island Princes follows in the wake of sister ship Coral Princess, and incorporates the extensive Personal Choice Cruising features of the company's larger "Grand-class" ships in a more compact vessel designed for transiting the locks of the Panama Canal. In a design twist, the ship features two full decks of public spaces, versus the traditional single Promenade Deck. ...

Island Princess Review - Hawaii

Island Princess

Arriving at port Los Angeles around 11:30am we dropped out luggage off, princess was doing their pre boarding. We chose to take the streetcar or the red car to the San Pedro fish market restaurant for lunch and as always the food was wonderful.

When we arrived back at the ship a little after 1pm we were inside the building with in 20 minutes. I was total of just over an hour before we were in our cabin. Embarkation went very smooth and fast. I am happy to say that half of our luggage as already at the cabin when we arrived.

From the time we arrived on the Island Princess she is a very clean ship and the crew is always working to keep her that way. They take keeping the passengers healthy very serious when you walk into the buffet there is a person standing there with the hand sanitizer for you before you can grab anything. The buffet in the Horizon always the hot food is hot wish is a little bit of a rarity. The foods trays are always are full or very close to being full. The food is very good.

The Wheelhouse lounge has the ball room or big bands type music playing at night every night. This was my favorite lounge. IT also had a small history museum of Princess and P&O.

The piano man Bill Barclay who is in the Bayou Cafe and jazz club is out standing.

The staff in all areas of the ship are very helpful courteous.

The mustard drill was nice they were held in the lounges instead of all in lines up on deck for what always seemed a lifetime.

The entertainment every night was wonderful from big names like Don Ware a writer from the Cosby show to Willie Tyler and Lester to Juggles on unicycles, and many more in between.

The cruise director is Billy Hygate. It is nice to see some with the company like him for over 23 years think some of his jokes were that old also.

In the Scholarship @ Sea program they offered the ceramics at sea. I was really looking forward to this till I saw the price of $35.00 an hour. To participate, I am not that talented to pay that much. Another one of the courses was introductions to the computer class was free. The more in depth computer class such as Photoshop there was a fee.

The putting green is free to all who want to play. To me a non golfer the holes were hard but I did get a hole in one on the first hole, per luck.

The Captains welcome aboard cocktail party was held in the atrium with very few seats. I missed the champagne and the meeting of the crew as on other cruises I have been on. This seemed to be more of get a time to get the formal pictures.

The universal Lounge they held many of the shows in I will say the seating in the lounge to see a show is not that good. The upstairs of the lounge you could not see the performer. It was very missed designed for shows.

Spent many hours on our balcony or the deck relaxing I know not that thrilling. They have different lectures everyday on Hawaii always very interesting. This was just a take it easy day. Have talked to a lot of other passengers all loving the trip. Went to the art auction, they have very reasonable prices on their art. Unfortunately the pieces I love are still out of my range with a son in college, but soon. They even had a class learning how to play a ukulele where they taught you 2 songs the class is limited to 20 people so sign up early in the day if you want to take the class. As always the fruit carving demonstrations. One activity that you can not miss is the pool Olympics; you have 2 teams doing very different activities in the pool very fun to watch. They had very interesting lectures about the Hawaiian Islands to WWII Veterans to the Wildlife on the Islands, each day a different topic. The wine tasting was very good was very informative this is the first time I have been to a tasting where they include a desert wine. Everyday while we were at sea they had an arts and crafts class with very simple projects but fun. She would always let us take extra supplies if we wanted to make more in the cabin. The cooking demonstrations and the galley tour are one of my favorite activities since I love to cook. Almost every night and during the days at sea they had movies in the Princess Theater, my husband went to most of them and loved that they offered them.

Today we are in Nawiliwili Kauai in port from 11am till 4:30pm sail time.

Even thought we were in port that had many activates going on board the ship.

My husband and I on our own reserved a flight with Air Ventures Hawaii for a 40 minute flight in a piper cub over part of the island. It was $89.00 per person. Had a great time very knowledgeable pilot of the areas and history of the island. Of course weather played a factor they had to change the flight pattern some what but other than that it was great.

Today we are in Lahaina Maui. 8am to 5:30pm

First off be careful when booking rental cars that you put in the correct airport a lot of people booked their cars for the other side by mistake. Or make it easy on yourself and use a travel agent. Today we rented a car today. We rode the Sugar cane train. It is great for young kids or trains nuts. You do not really see any sugar cane it runs parallel to the main road that you take to the beaches. We also drove up the coast to a lot of the beaches you see very beautiful sites.

A lot of nice shops near the ship including the Wyland and Lassen Galleries.

The ABC stores have a great price on the chocolate covered macadamia nuts that everyone loves.

Honolulu Oahu from 7am till 10:30pm

Today we split up my husband Bob went the Missouri and the Bowfin. Visitors to the battleship Missouri are given a walkman ? style cassette player that narrates their tour as they explore the battleship. Then you can explore areas of the ship that are not on the tape. More of the ship is being opened up for tours every month. The Bowfin you are also given a walkman ? style cassette that makes you imagine what life on board the 80 man submarine was like. You are able to walk to the Bowfin, Missouri and the Arizona. Allow at least 3 hours to visit the Missouri and the Bowfin. For the Arizona if you get there by 9am plan on a three to four hour wait to get the launch to take you to the memorial.

I went to Hanauma?s Bay the nation underwater park. Be advice take the city bus there is for $2.00 much cheaper than booking with a tour company, you still have to pay the $5.00 to get into the park and you can rent snorkel equipment there. You have to watch a 9 minute movie on the park rules. It is a wonderful place to snorkel you can see so many different types of fish including sea turtles. I was able to see many baby turtles close to shore. The further you go out the large fish you see. The small fish are in the sallow water over the reef. At times you are only about maybe a 12 inches above the reef if not closer. I highly recommend to all that love to snorkel or scuba dive.

Tonight my husband and I went to the Sea Life Park for a Luau it was very enjoyable besides the regular luau we were able to see a dolphin show and learn about the penguins. This is also the only night time luau we could see and be guaranteed getting back to the ship on time. None of the trips were offered by the ship. Booked on own.

On the ship tonight they had the Halau Hula Olana Folkloric show. Talked to many passengers that saw the show and they enjoyed it very much.

Kona from 9am till 5:30pm

Today we took the ships tour the zodiac and snorkel trip. I love how they had each tour set in marked off areas of the lounge till we could get a tender. Very orderly, the tour was in an old navy seas zodiac. When they say it is going to be a rough ride they are not joking. At times we were going 50mph. We were very lucky we got to see many dolphins in the morning they were sleeping coming back we saw bottlenose dolphins and they played in our wake then we saw a group of spinner dolphins including babies learning how to spin. We snorkeled at Captain Cook?s memorial very beautiful snorkeling very calm and relaxing.

The main event tonight was the Hawaiian Island Deck party lots of dancing, games and a great time under the stars.

Hilo 8am - 3:30pm

Today we were woken up by the ship shaking very hard. Could not figure out why till they announced that the islands had 2 very strong earthquakes. A lot of the tours were canceled today because of the earthquakes.

We rented a car and went to the Crater national park very interesting to see the old but still active volcanoes. You need at least a couple of hours to do the whole park. Then we drove down to the black sands beach, it is known for having sea turtles we did luck out to see one as she was headed back out to sea. Then we drove further down the coast beautiful sites.

Disembarkation I do not think they can run smooth on any ship any more because of the size of the ships. It was average. They did have the area where you get your luggage set up great very easy to find you items.
