With the growing popularity of family cruising, most ships have activities and areas strictly for kids and teens. But did you know many of those same ships provide tranquil, adult-only areas designed for peace and quiet? Here’s a look at some of the adults-only options available to today’s cruisers. When Carnival Cruise Lines decided to refit its Fantasy Class “Fun Ships,” part of the $250 million-plus refurbishment included creating an adults-only section called “Serenity.” The Serenity areas will be located in a secluded aft section of the ship that provides relaxing ocean vistas and oversized umbrellas for maximum shade. Two whirlpools will be available, along with plush chaise lounges and chairs and complete bar service. And when you’re in the mood for something to eat, the Lido restaurants are conveniently located nearby. Princess Cruises’ adults-only oasis, the Sanctuary, is next to the Lotus Spa. There is currently a Sanctuary on Crown Princess and Emerald Princess at the uppermost forward deck. Ruby Princess, which debuts later this year, will also have one of these areas. “Serenity Stewards” are available to provide guests with amenities such as chilled face towels and light meals. Guests can rent MP3 players, complete with noise-canceling headphones. And if you want spa services, the Sanctuary features two outdoor private cabanas where you can receive a variety of massages. The fee for a half-day pass to The Sanctuary is $10. Although Celebrity Cruises doesn’t have formal adult-only areas on its ships, the Solariums on the Millennium-class ships serve this function, along with the thalassotherapy pools. The line’s new vessel, the Celebrity Solstice, has a country-club theme and is geared toward adults. The ship, which enters service in December, will cater to spa enthusiasts with special access and priority appointments. Like its sister cruise line Celebrity, Royal Caribbean International has solariums on its Vision-, Radiance-, and Freedom-class chips that are intended for use only by grown-ups. A rectractable dome over the pool and hot tubs, along with padded lounge chairs and floor to ceiling windows, makes the solarium a tranquil space for watching the world go by.
