From the cosmopolitan attractions of Sydney, Melbourne, and Auckland to the majestic natural beauty of New Zealand’s fjords and southern alps, an Australian & New Zealand cruise enables you to experience the wonders of “Down Under” while enjoying the comforts and convenience of a modern cruise ship.

Itineraries

There are basically three different itineraries offered by major cruise lines such as Princess, Celebrity, Holland America, and Royal Caribbean. Cruises operate during our fall and winter, which is springtime and summer in the Southern Hemisphere.

One option is to fly into a major airport in Australia or New Zealand (usually Sydney or Auckland), embark on a 10- to 15-day cruise to various ports in Australia and New Zealand, and then fly back home. Celebrity Cruises and Holland America Line, for example, offer 14-night Sydney-Auckland (or reverse) cruises in January, February, March, November, and December. Ports of call often include Melbourne and Hobart in Australia and Dunedin, Christchruch, Wellington, and Napier in New Zealand. In addition, these itineraries include scenic cruising featuring New Zealand’s picturesque fjords.

Another option is to take a repositioning cruise between Southeast Asia and Australia. In March of 2009, for instance, Holland America Line has a 19-day Auckland to Singapore itinerary that includes visits to the Great Barrier Reef and Indonesia.

If you’re looking for a taste of a world cruise, you can book a segment of an around-the-world-trip that includes stopovers in Australia and/or New Zealand. The Tahitian Princess’ 2009 World Cruise itinerary, for example, includes a segment with stops in Tasmania, Sydney, Brisbane, and Cairns.

Pre- and Post-Cruise Add-ons

No matter what itinerary you choose, you’ll be able to experience exciting local cultures and lore, enriching shore excursions, and fantastic shopping. And because there are tourist sites in Australia and New Zealand that are not accessible via cruise ship, you’ll want to take advantage of pre-or-post-cruise add-ons that enable you to travel deep into the Australian Outback and the Great Barrier Reef. Celebrity Cruises offers a 5-night “Cruisetour,” for instance, that includes overnight stays in Sydney, Ayers Rock, and Port Douglas, plus a full day of marine adventure to the Great Barrier Reef.
