According to a recent survey, more than one million children cruise every year. In addition to providing a great value, cruises offer activities geared to all age groups—from infants to teens—and the opportunity for parents to enjoy each other’s company while the kids are taking part in organized activities such as building their own surfboards or participating in “open mic” karaoke contests. And along with onboard programs, cruise lines have also added kid- and teen-friendly shore excursions.
Here’s a look at what some of the most popular family-oriented cruise lines provide.

Royal Caribbean International – Royal Caribbean’s Voyager-class ships (Voyager, Adventure, Explorer, Navigator, and Mariner of the Seas) and Freedom-class chips (Freedom of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas, and Independence of the Seas) boast rock climbing walls, ice skating rinks, miniature golf courses and in-line skating areas. Parades and special events are frequently featured in the ships’ indoor promenades, and on Freedom-class ships, kids can try their skill on the FlowRider, a surf park at sea. These ships are especially popular with teens 13-17 because they have access to a section of the ship that is dedicated to facilities just for them. Teens can come and go throughout the day on their own schedule and are not required to sign up for pre-programmed activities.

Princess Cruises – Ruby Princess, the latest edition to the line’s fleet, debuts in November and will offer programs similar to those found on sister ships Crown Princess and Emerald Princess. Children’s programs are split among three age groups—ages 3-7, 8-12, and 13-17. On certain nights the 8-12 group can bring along their parents to the ship’s working galley, when they can make pizzas, roll sushi, and decorate cakes. Another popular family activity is watching movies together on a 300-square-foot LED screen located by the pool.

Carnival Cruise Lines – Carnival’s $250 million Evolutions of Fun initiative on the line’s eight Fantasy-class ships promise a good time for the entire family. Waterworks is an expansive water park that adults, as well as kids, can enjoy. And on the line’s newest ship, Carnival Splendor, kids will enjoy a two-level play area for Camp Carnival. Teens 15-17 are entertained in Club 02, and Circle C caters to tweens.

Norwegian Cruise Line – NCL has more connecting staterooms—penthouses to small cabins—than any other cruise line. Families also like the “Freestyle Dining” offered in every onboard restaurant. And, of course, there’s a full range of activities offered for all age groups.
