From mastering the basic cha-cha-cha steps to learning to make digital photo album, today’s cruise ships offer a smorgasbord of onboard enrichment programs that provide guests with a variety of learning experiences while at sea. Yes, you can still play bingo—and even shuffleboard if you wish—but be sure to check out additional options designed to liven up your cruise vacation and make learning fun. Following are brief descriptions of some of the programs currently available.
Princess Cruises’ ScholarShip@Sea Program – Princess presents a series of more than 70 contemporary enrichment programs at various skill levels that allow guests to involve themselves in things they might never do at home, or to advance their skills in areas that interest them. Choose from up to forty courses per voyage, six per sea day, from core topic areas including: photography, computers, culinary, and ceramics. For example, you can learn to “throw a pot” and make use of Princess’ unique sea-going kiln. Also, many Princess Cruises ships feature celebrity guests or experts in subjects such as art history, culinary, and destinations, and in Alaska, naturalists and rangers present an insider’s look at the state’s wildlife and culture.
Holland America Line’s HAL Explorations – Holland America enhances the destination experience with region-specific enrichment opportunities such as the Explorations Speaker Series and demonstrations and classes presented by noted chefs in cooperation with Food & Wine magazine. For example, the line’s Culinary Arts Center integrates the love for fine food and wine with a unique and entertaining experience. Guests can sample fine wines from around the world or learn to make a new gourmet dish in a hands-on cooking class.
Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Cruise Discoveries – Designed to harmonize each voyage, the Discovery Series focuses on the historical, cultural, and geographical places of interest at the ports of call on any given cruise. In addition, topics such as finance, wine, and astronomy are also covered. Two to five expert guest lecturers are onboard per cruise and may include a famous news correspondent, well-known author, university professor, or art historian.
Norwegian Cruise Line – Vessels operating intra-Hawaiian island itineraries feature Hawaiian arts and crafts classes that include lei making. On other itineraries, NCL offers lifestyle and wellness lectures and classes in computers, art, and dance.
