Pre-Cruise Hotel: Stayed at the South Beach Resort in Worthing, Barbados on Accra Beach. It was a condo style hotel. We had a studio suite with a nice balcony overlooking the pool and the beach across the street. By no means a 5 star Resort, but more than adequate for a one night stay. Several others from our cruise also stayed at this resort. Accra Beach with sugar white sand and gentle surf was right across the street as well as a taxi stand. Convenience store around the corner and a fast food joint as well. Sugar Reef was just about ¼ mile up the street and ?supposedly? had gratis deck chairs for South Beach guests. I think there were a total of 8 available for the guests. None were available for us the day we went. Of course you could have day use for 5 Bd $ each. Kind of a racket I think, but nothing to get too excited about. We paid $160 per night through www.hotels.com If we were staying there for an extended period, we probably would have opted for the Fairmont, Cobblers Cove, or something similar.

Embarkation: When they say 3pm they mean 3 pm! We got there at 2:30pm and still had to wait until the magic hour to board. You could pay $100 extra per person for early embarkation, which allows you to board about 10am and enjoy the common areas of the ship until your cabin is ready. We opted not to do so. We went shopping instead. We probably would have saved money by paying for the early embarkation, but then Diana would not be wearing that gold bracelet that she bought either (LOL). Once underway though we were taken straight onboard, champagne handed to you while you had your pictures taken and key cards handed out, and then escorted to your cabin where your chilled bottle of Pommery was waiting for you. For some reason though, they had trouble with the bag handlers in Barbados and luggage did not show up to the cabins until very late. First night was casual night anyways, but many (myself included) had to show up to the dining room in our shorts.

Disembarkation: There may be some issues with disembarkation in Ft. Lauderdale as Kristin had mentioned on her review when they embarked on 11/2. We were not cleared by Customs and Immigration until almost 10:00am. We were fine because our flight did not leave until almost noon, but I can imagine that there were some with flights prior to 11:00am that had some problems. Once we were cleared it was easy off the ship, easy to find our luggage, a porter picked them right up, and off to grab a cab to the airport. No hassles and no fuss.

Great friends and staff: It was so nice to see much of the same staff that we had when we were on our Whisper cruise last May still onboard. Captain Ignazio Tatulli was still at the helm, Michael Gregurich was still the CD, Ana Azevedo had been promoted from Concierge to Asst. CD, Dr. Ramon Eschague was still the ships Dr. and came over and gave Diana a big hug, and Stefano Fattori was still the Maitre D?. It was like sailing with good friends. And speaking of friends we met so many new friends onboard whom we enjoyed their company throughout the cruise and hope that we will be sailing with in the future. I had a scuba buddy that I did a couple of dives with, we had a fantastic trivia team that helped us rack up those SS points, and great dinner companions from all over the world with whom we enjoyed many a stimulating conversation with. You know the destinations are great, but it is the friends that you make that make the cruise a lasting memory.

Food and wine was fantastic: This cruise was a Culinary Cruise with Neil Hitchen the Executive Chef at the Relais & Chateaux Resort Cobblers Cove onboard doing some cooking demonstrations along with Executive Chef for Silversea Dirk Martin. If fact we had a prepared dinner by Mr. Hitchen a couple of the evenings in the Terrace Café and it was very good. They were five course set menus with wine pairings. We also enjoyed our dinner served course by course in our room, one evening. We did miss out on going to Le Champagne, but we did not suffer. Only one time on this cruise would I say the food was marginal and it was in The Restaurant on the very first evening. We learned early on to look at the menus ahead of time and if we didn?t like what we saw, then we would just try a different venue. It also helped knowing Stefano. He managed to squeeze us in without reservations a couple of times when the Terrace Café was fully booked. I wonder if I can also blame him for all the weight that I gained on this cruise!!! LOL Also, SS has to have the best hamburgers at sea out by the pool. They are really good and they will cook them just the way that you want.

Service: Usually quite good, sometimes not so good, and onetime just downright ugly!!! Let me qualify this by saying that the ship was full, with 370 people onboard with a capacity of 382. So with that being said, I would say that it was quite remarkable. There were times by the pool that you raised your flag on your deck chair and they would pass right by and not take your drink order, and there were times in The Restaurant that they would forget a something and would have to be reminded. Room service always showed up at the time designated and usually the right order. However, I do think our room stewardess was probably a little overworked. We made specific requests such as what we wanted our bar stocked with and it sometimes made it and sometimes didn?t.

The ugly happened the last night of the cruise. I had just finished packing and set our luggage out at 11pm and was ready for my champagne. I opened the cooler and again there was no bottle. Not to worry though, I would just call room service and have them bring a bottle chilling in an ice bucket as I had done on previous nights when the champagne had not been stocked. I was then told that they would only send me up two glasses, not a full bottle. I told the gal that our room stewardess had been told that we wanted a bottle each night chilling in our room and that it sometimes happened, but more often didn?t and would they please call her then to bring us the bottle that we had previously requested. She said she would see what she could do. A few minutes later we got a call from room service and said they were attempting to find us a bottle. He said that the ships provisions were locked down and they were having difficulty finding us a bottle of champagne, but he would keep trying. I was getting angry and was prepared walked down a few doors to the Grappa Bar in my bathrobe and order about 6 glasses of champagne to take back to our room if that was what it was going to take, when our champagne arrived from room service. I would have hated to have this last little glitch to cast a shadow over an otherwise fabulous cruise. I don?t know if this is a new policy, but they need to rethink this. I told Diana that they probably had problems with people ordering full bottles of hard liquor the last night and then taking the rest home with them and this was just a result of that.

The cabin: We stayed in our usual Vista Suite with the non-private balcony (this time #525). It was 287 sq ft with lots of storage a separate tub and shower and dual under-counter mount sinks surrounded by granite. The room was very clean and extremely convenient being on deck 5 down from the shops, casino, reception, tour desk, and of course the future cruise consultant, The Bar, and the lower level of the Viennese Lounge.

The public areas: The Terrace Café located on deck 7 became our favorite with candlelight dinner by night and sweeping aft deck to be enjoyed during the day with expansive glass windows throughout that gave way to spectacular views. Our least favorite was The Bar on deck 5 where we had team trivia each day. With its lower ceiling and limited glass, it was a dark smoke filled room that was not very enjoyable to sit and relax in. We spent a fair amount of time in the Panorama Lounge located on deck 8. Also lots of glass and an expansive deck this became another favorite of ours for afternoon tea and before dinner cocktails. The Viennese Lounge situated on two levels of deck 5 and 6 is a beautiful theatre. Loved the sweeping sofas, but hated the club style chairs that if you were anything but petite size, became topple chairs! The pool area on deck 8 was surrounded by glass as well with the walking and jogging overlooking the pool area on deck 9 with the pool bar also on deck 8 on the starboard side and the pool grill on the port side. Did not use the casino, so I can?t comment on it. We did use the Mandara Spa where Diana and I both had massages with some of that $300 cruise credit money that we had. We had the Balinese treatment which was basically a pressure point massage. I loved mine and the gal that did it Angela was very strong. Diana was a little disappointed and felt that they rushed her out after the treatment was finished. Diana also had her hair cut while onboard with John from NZ and she said he did an excellent job.

Onboard activities: There seemed to be a lot of stuff going on throughout the day to get involved in. From cooking demonstrations, to lectures, to bridge and dancing lessons, to pool volleyball, ice carving, team trivia, etc. there was always something to do or not do. One disappointment was that our team trivia was scheduled in the middle of teatime each day. We found ourselves rushing from scones to the contest of useless knowledge.

The ports:

Bridgetown, Barbados ? Mostly we hung out at the beach before we boarded the ship. As stated before we were at Accra Beach at the Sugar Reef. It was a sugar sand beach with a restaurant and bar and gentle surf. A very nice beach to just sit and relax at, located about 15 minutes from the pier.

St. Georges, Grenada ? There was a lot of devastation around the island from last years hurricane. There is a new pier with new shops that are about to open. We decided on an afternoon dive and snorkel with www.devotion2ocean.com located at the Rex Grenada Hotel. I did my first salt water dive and decided to do a shallow (35 ft) reef dive to get my buoyancy figured out before I ventured into deeper waters. I could not believe how clear the water was. Visibility was easily 100 ft. Weather was absolutely perfect.

Castries St. Lucia ? We were not up early enough (6 am) to see us sailing past the Pitons, and did not do an island tour, since we had been here before. It was also raining this day, but we had booked a dive with Tommy at Frogs Diving. He picked us up at the ferry dock not too far from the ship and we went to the Marine Park where I did my first advanced water dive. It was a wreck dive at 85 ft where I did my first partial penetration dive. From there we did our second tank dive, which was a drift dive along the reef at Anse Cochon at 35 ft. We then headed back to the ship in the driving rain, but it was a great day other than a few showers.

Iles des Saintes, Guadelope ? Ended up being a sea day because of weather, with winds so high that it was impossible to drop anchor. Instead the captain steered the ship on the leeward side of Dominica where we were protected and we sailed north and south all day. Personally, I loved having the extra sea day, while I know that others were disappointed.

St. Johns Antigua ? We spent the morning shopping and then had an afternoon tour with www.lawrenceofantigua.com For $35 each we had 5 hour tour of the island and some beach time at Long Bay, where we once again got rained on. If anybody is going to Antigua, you need to try Lawrence. He is absolutely fabulous. This was our second time to use him so we requested so we skipped Nelsons Dockyard, and headed to some other sites such as Devils Bridge, that we hadn?t seen the previous time. It was in this port that we were supposed to have our evening on deck BBQ, but it got cancelled due to weather. Really disappointing!

Basseterre, St. Kitts ? Here we did the Catamaran and Snorkel tour with SS. We loved the catamaran and the crew, but the snorkeling stunk!!! Maybe I?m jaded now that I have started diving. It was an afternoon snorkel and had been windy and the visibility was really poor. Not much fish and the coral were not very vibrant. Other than the wind, the weather was absolutely perfect.

Road Town, Tortola ? Here we had chartered a dive boat from www.scubabvi.com and planned on doing a two tank dive including a dive of the RMS Rhone. Kathryn was our dive guide and captain. We had to scrub the dive of the Rhone because the currents were running to swift, so we headed for another wreck dive (actually a couple of tugs that were sunk) instead. This was also in about 85 feet of water. On this dive we were supposed to do a front roll entry dive from the back platform of the boat. Well, this is where I mooned everybody onboard. As I went to roll into the water, my bathing suit caught on something on the platform and pulled my trunks down to my knees as I hit the water!!! What a site!!! Then as we headed into the tug, our guide went through a doorway into the cabin compartment, and I decided to follow. Well, she was a little smaller than me and I ended up getting stuck in the doorway with my weights and vest. Another site, I?m sure. I just had to push myself back out and continue outside of the vessel. We then headed over to have lunch on a nearby island and followed up in the afternoon with a shallower (35 ft) reef dive. The fish and the coral were simply amazing. I am ready to go back to Tortola right now. I loved it and the weather was absolutely perfect.

Then we had two glorious relaxing sea days on our way back to Ft. Lauderdale! Ahhh! And thinking maybe we could do that Transatlantic Cruise afterall, which is now set for 2007!

Cruise Tip

The evening prior to lobster night let your waiter know if you plan to have a double order of lobster.
