Built at the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera, Italy, the flagship ms Amsterdam sets the standard for our fleet of five-star cruise ships. As the third ship bearing the name of the Dutch capital in the line's more than 130-year history, the ms Amsterdam blends the very latest in shipbuilding technology with the artistry, personalized touches, and superior service that has made Holland America Line one of the highest-rated cruise lines in the world. Traveling aboard her is world-class cruising at its finest.

At the heart of the ms Amsterdam is the Planeto Astrolabium, a specially commissioned signature sculpture suspended and soaring in a three-story atrium. The stunning Astrolabe tracks constellations, the planets, world time and ship time. Dutch heritage and tradition aboard the ms Amsterdam is clearly displayed in original Art Deco pieces that once graced the Nieuw Amsterdam of 1938. For a contemporary touch, works of the noted maritime artist Stephen Card adorn public spaces. With the capacity to carry 1,380 guests, the ms Amsterdam features 172 staterooms with verandahs. The ms Amsterdam completed all Signature of Excellence enhancements to her public rooms and staterooms in Spring 2005.

Cruise Tip

If you plan to snorkel you might want to pack a small zip-lock bag with corn flakes. Drop a few and watch the fish come to you. Careful, though... it can REALLY draw a crowd... Or you can use a dry milk-bone. Or a much better idea is a can of squeeze cheese. The fish love it (read previous posts) but sometimes it can seem a bit like feeding sea gulls bread crumbs--they can go a bit crazy. The good thing about the squeeze cheese is that you can just squirt out a little at a time. You can squirt it out underwater and watch them come right to you, or you can surface, squeeze some in your hand, roll it in a ball, and toss it 10 feet away and then go under to watch the fun.
